Tanner began his football career in high school, when he joined the school’s football team. Throughout his high school career, he maintained excellent grades. Tanner also had the opportunity to play at the national level in his senior year of high school, at the 2018 US Army All-American Bowl and the Polynesian Bowl.

By the end of his senior year in high school, he had been named a four-star recruit by Rivals, 247sports, and ESPN. He then took a two-year break from sports to serve on a religious mission in Brazil for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Tanner returned to Stanford University in 2020, where he began his collegiate football career with the Stanford Cardinal.

In his freshman season in 2020, he only played one game and completed three passes for 62 yards. The following season, he was the team’s starting quarterback, completing 15 passes for 118 yards against Kansas State.

During his sophomore season, he also received the Manning Award for Star of the Week and the Davey O Brian Award twice.

Tanner was named Pac-12 Freshman of the Week in September 2021. He had three touchdown passes and 293 yards passing against UCLA, and he also led his team to a win against Oregon by throwing a touchdown that tied the game.
