Tiago Pires was born on March 13, 1980, in Lisbon, Portugal. He has surfed and competed with some of the top professionals in the sport including Andy Irons and Taj Burrow. He first began surfing at the young age of 9, where he went on to win the sub-14 national championship in 1994 and again in the sub-16 national championships in 1995. In 1996, when he was 16, he officially joined the national circuit, where he met the legendary surfer José Seabra who later became his coach.
