Cole was a history and politics professor before becoming a politician.

Cole was the Executive Director of the National Republican Congressional Committee after serving in the Oklahoma Senate from 1988 to 1991.

He served as Oklahoma’s Secretary of State under Governor Frank Keating from 1995 to 1999 and aided in the recovery efforts following the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing.

For much of the 1980s, Tom was also the Chairman of the Oklahoma Republican City.

Cole is also involved in national politics, having served as both the NRCC’s Executive Director and the Republican National Committee’s Chief of Staff.

Cole worked as a paid consultant for the US Chamber of Commerce for two years.
