Victor Uwaifo’s Professional Career
Sir Victor’s career started while he was still in school when he was contracted to sing with Victor Olaiya’s all-stars band in Lagos and headed the school band.
Between 1960 and 1965, while working for the NTA, he swiftly formed his own band, the Melody Maestros, and produced songs such as “Oko no mu me,” “Police and Akugbe,” and others.
He signed with the Philips (West Africa) label in 1965 and released songs such as “Guitar Boy,” “Joromi,” and “Siwo-Siwo.” These songs were immensely popular in Nigeria and other parts of Africa at the time.
Between 1965 and 1968, he developed the Akwete rhythm sound. He invented a new rhythm called “Shadow” in 1969, which was accompanied by a new dance named “Shadow,” which was a blend of Akwete and twist.
He then released another song, “Mami Water,” which he says was inspired by a chance encounter with a “Mami water” (Mermaid) while sunbathing on Lagos’ Bar Beach.
