A theoretical physicist who won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1998 for his research in understanding electronic properties of materials. He also played an integral role in the development of density functional theory. Walter Kohn was born on March 9, 1923 in Austria. He won the Nobel Prize the year before Ahmed Zewail did. He arrived in England in 1938 as part of the famous Kindertransport rescue operation, where the UK took in nearly 10,000 Jewish children from Nazi territories.
