Walter Rudolf Hess was born on March 17, 1881, in Switzerland. He and fellow scientist Egas Moniz were dual recipients of the 1949 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. Moniz was honored for his development of the now-infamous lobotomy procedure. He studied medicine at the University of Zurich and subsequently opened a private ophthalmology practice.
