An American biochemist, best known for his work with enzymes and virus proteins who won the Nobel prize in Chemistry in 1946. His book Chemistry: A Beautiful Thing was awarded a Pulitzer Prize nomination. Wendell Meredith Stanley was born on August 16, 1904, in Ridgeville, IN. Like Irving Langmuir, he was among the first Americans to win a Nobel Prize in Chemistry. He obtained a Ph.D. in chemistry in 1929 from the University of Illinois, where he also received his MS two years before.
