Devyn Keith was charged with fourth-degree stealing, a Class A misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in prison and a $6,000 fine.

Keith was first elected to the Huntsville City Council in October 2016.

Similarly, his district includes parts of downtown Huntsville and the entirety of North Huntsville, as well as Alabama A&M University.

Devyn Keith was arrested on suspicion of theft from the University Drive Walmart.

However, he was released the same day he was detained.

Officers from the Huntsville Police Department (HPD) were called to 6140 University Drive on an unrelated issue at 1 p.m. on February 2, 2023.

When authorities arrived, they were alerted of a shoplifting incident at a nearby Walmart.

The shoplifter was identified as Devyn Keith, a council member since 2016.

Keith was apprehended and booked into Madison County Jail without incident.

Keith was released at 5:34 p.m. the same day he was arrested and subjected to his first investigation.

Keith responded to the situation the next day on his Facebook page.

He insisted on leaving Walmart after using the self-service checkout.

However, he did not pay for a $20 pair of headphones in his basket.

Following the comment, other people related to the issue and stated that they occasionally forget to pay for items at self-service checkouts.

Keith’s friends and well-wishers have come out in support of him following the shoplifting conviction.

Following the shoplifting incident and his arrest, Devyn Keith was charged with one count of property theft- taking things valued at $500 or less.

The offense is a Class A misdemeanor in Alabama, punishable by up to a year in prison and a $6,000 fine.

According to the Madison County Sheriff’s Office, Councilman Keith is now facing fresh theft charges.

The Sheriff’s office has already issued an arrest warrant for the Council member.

According to a spokesman, Keith was anticipated to appear in court following the second warrant.

The District 1 council member is charged with four misdemeanor charges of stealing more merchandise from a Walmart store.

The Huntsville Police Department initially handled the situation.

It has now been transferred to the Madison County District Attorney’s Office to avoid any conflict of interest or impression.

John Taylor, Devyn Keith’s lawyer, stated he had no comment at this time.
