When American tennis player Venus Williams disclosed she had Sjögren’s syndrome, it garnered headlines.
Sjögren’s syndrome is a chronic systemic autoimmune disease that is pronounced: “Showgren’s syndrome.”
It happens when the body’s immune system attacks itself accidentally, killing healthy tissues.
It affects multiple organs and is chronic due to its long duration.
When Sjögren’s syndrome develops on its own, it is called primary Sjögren’s syndrome.
Secondary Sjögren’s syndrome occurs when it coexists with another autoimmune condition, such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, or systemic sclerosis.
This condition presently has no treatment.

Venus Williams’ Personal Life
Yetunde Price, the assistant and older sister of Venus and Serena Williams, was shot and died in Compton, California, in 2003.
It was near the courts where the sisters had previously practiced.
The Williams family issued the following statement shortly after her death: “The shooting death of our beloved Yetunde has left us feeling startled, grieved, and crushed.”
She was our rock and base. She was her sisters’ helper, confidante, and advisor, and her death leaves a void that will never be filled. Because of our severe agony, today is the most miserable day of our life.”
Venus Williams earned an associate’s degree in fashion design from the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale on December 13, 2007.
