Benny Safdie discusses his casting in Oppenheimer.

In an interview with GQ magazine, Benny acknowledges that Christopher Nolan was looking for someone “fresh and unexpected” to play the coveted role of Edward Teller.

He had seen Safdie in two movies: Good Time and Licorice Pizza. According to Christopher Nolan:

“I called Paul [Thomas Anderson] and asked about Benny, and he gave him the strongest possible recommendation, saying that he’s not only an incredible actor but also a wonderful guy.”

Benny, on the other hand, stated that preparation for the role was difficult because he had to emulate Edward Teller’s mannerisms on a daily basis as well as adjust to a heavy Hungarian accent.
