One of the first Modernist architects in the United States. Led the design of the Williamsburg Houses in 1937, a 20-building modernist housing project. William Lescaze was born on March 27, 1896, in Switzerland. He and Frank Lloyd Wright were both Modernist pioneers. He immigrated to the U.S. in 1920 after studying at Zurich’s École Polytechnique fédérale de Zurich, from which he graduated in 1919. He was first employed by Cleveland’s Hubbell & Benes, then established his practice in 1923 in New York City.
