William Thornton’s Death

Thornton wrote in December 1799 about being summoned to Mount Vernon in the 1820s. He was hoping to be able to treat George Washington.

However, following Washington’s death, he devised a scheme to resuscitate Washington’s frozen corpse by freezing it.

“First to thaw him in cold water, than to lay him in blankets, and by degrees and friction to give him warmth, and to activate the minute blood vessels, while simultaneously opening a passage to the Lungs through the Trachea, and inflating them with air, to produce artificial respiration, and to transfuse blood into him from a lamb.”

Unfortunately, his idea was not confirmed. There was, however, “no doubt in (Thornton’s) mind that (Washington’s) rehabilitation was possible.” Then, on March 28, 1828, he left this lovely planet.
