He was picked in the first round of the MLB Draft by the St. Louis Cardinals in 1980, and he made his MLB debut on August 18, 1982.

McGee spent much of his career with the St. Louis Cardinals, where he won two National League hitting titles (1985 and 1990) as well as a Gold Glove Award (1985).

He was also a two-time All-Star (1983 and 1985) and won the National League MVP award in 1985.

During his career, McGee also played for the Oakland Athletics, San Francisco Giants, and Boston Red Sox in addition to the Cardinals.

He retired from baseball in 1999 with a 295-lifetime batting average, 2,254 hits, and 352 stolen bases.
