Alan Kalter was an American television announcer based in New York City. He passed away recently at the age of 78.

He was best known as the announcer for the show “Late Show with David Letterman,” a role he held from September 4, 1995, until Letterman’s retirement from the show on May 20, 2015. He also hosted the popular show “Alan Kalter’s Celebrity Interview.”

He was born on March 21, 1943, in Little Neck and Cedarhurst, New York.

He was, however, born in Brooklyn. He was a teacher of English and public speaking at Baldwin High School.

He was also the Michelin Man’s official voice and later attended Hobart College in Geneva, New York.

Following that, he began working on local radio stations to advance his broadcasting career.

Alan Kalter’s Professional Career

Because of his show Letterman, Kalter was dubbed “Big Red” and “TV’s Uncle Jerry.” When Bill Wendell’s replacement was announced on September 4, 1995, he began his work as the “voice” of “Late Show with David Letterman.”

He used to announce the guests at the beginning of each show and acted in his comedy sketches on a regular basis. Kalter has provided voiceovers for hundreds of national radio and television commercials.

He was also the USA Network’s lead voice. In the early 1990s, he also provided his voice for SportsChannel America promos.

He was the announcer for many New York-based television shows prior to “Late Show with David Letterman,” including The Money Maze, The $25,000 Pyramid, To Tell the Truth, and The $128,000 Question.

All of Kalter’s previous series (except The Money Maze) were recorded in the Ed Sullivan Theater, where his most recent show “Late Show with David Letterman” was produced.

Kalter took over for Bill Wendell on both “Truth” and “Late Show.”

In 2003, Kalter served as the announcer for the 45th Annual Grammy Awards Ceremony, which was held in New York.

Personal History and Cause of Death

Kalter was living in Stamford, Connecticut, with his family. He had a long marriage with his wife Carol Cepler, but they soon separated and later divorced.

In 2003, he married Peggy Masterson for the second time. The couple was together for approximately 18 years.

He was on the bed with his wife Peggy and two daughters on each side of the bed when he died on October 4, 2021, at the age of 78.
