Anna Netrebko: Birth, Parents

Anna Yuryevna Netrebko was born on September 18, 1971, in Krasnodar, Krasnodarskiy Kray, RSFSR, USSR, as a Russian soprano opera singer to a geologist father and a communications engineer mother.

Anna Netrebko: Professional Career

Anna Netrebko began her singing career in the 1990s, following a two-year training at a musical college and admission to the St. Petersburg State Conservatory (then the Leningrad Conservatory).

She worked as a janitor at the Mariinsky Theatre before being discovered by Valery Gergiev, the director of an opera company. Her operatic stage debut was as Susanna in Le Nozze di Figaro at the Mariinsky Theatre.

This was following her first-place finish in Russia’s prestigious Mikhail Glinka vocal competition in 1993.

Despite her desire to be an actress, her voice teachers helped her see her beauty as a singer.

Anna was able to take several prominent roles with the Kirov Opera with the help of her director Valery Gergiev, whom she considered her mentor, to the point where she was given the opera’s leading role, Susanna. Pamina in Die Zauberflöte, Amina in La Sonnambula, Rosina in Il Barbiere di Siviglia, and Lucia in Lucia di Lammermoor are among her roles.

Netrebko made her American debut in 1995, playing the title role of Lyudmila in a San Francisco Opera production of Glinka’s Ruslan and Lyudmila. Following her successful singing career, Netrebko became a frequent guest singer in San Francisco, where she was also known for her interpretations of other Russian operatic roles, including Louisa in Betrothal in a Monastery, Natasha in Prokofiev’s War and Peace, and Marfa in The Tsar’s Bride.

Anna appeared in a number of operas during the 2000s. She made her Metropolitan Opera debut in the Met premiere of War and Peace, sang her first Donna Anna in Don Giovanni, as Violetta in Verdi’s La Traviata in Munich, and took the title role in Lucia di Lammermoor at the Los Angeles Opera, among many other roles.

During this time, she released her debut album, Opera Arias. Sempre Libera, Anna’s second album, was released in 2004. As a result, Musical America magazine named her the 2008 “Musician of the Year.”

Anna Netrebko began her career as Norina in Don Pasquale at New York’s Metropolitan Opera House on November 13, 2010, followed by her title role of Anna Bolena at the Vienna State Opera.

Her success in the music industry has earned her numerous awards and accolades, including the Russian Federation’s State Prize.

She was even honored by the Austrian government, which named her “Kammersängerin,” and Time Magazine, which included her on its Time 100 list in 2007.
