Beau Biden clerked for Judge Steven McAuliffe of the United States District Court for the District of New Hampshire after graduating from law school.

From 1995 through 2004, Beau worked at the US Department of Justice in Philadelphia, first as Counsel to the Office of Policy Development and then as a federal prosecutor in the US Attorney’s Office.

He was also in Kosovo after the Kosovo War in 1999, working for the OSCE to train judges and prosecutors for the local court system. He joined the legal firm of Bifferato, Gentilotti, Biden & Balick in 2004 as a partner and worked there for two years before being elected Attorney General of Delaware.

After Joe Biden was selected for Vice President of the United States at the Democratic National Convention in 2008, Beau presented his father.

As a member of the Delaware Army National Guard, Beau entered the military in 2003 and attended The JAG School at the University of Virginia.

As a member of the 261st Signal Brigade in Smyrna, Delaware, he ascended to the rank of Major in the Judge Advocate General’s Corps. In addition, in January 2009, he traveled from Iraq to Washington, D.C. for the presidential inauguration and his father’s swearing-in as vice president, before returning to Iraq.

After a year of active duty in Iraq, he returned in September 2009. For his service in Iraq, he was also awarded the Bronze Star Medal. Army Chief of Staff Raymond Odierno delivered the eulogy at his funeral after his death.

He was also given a posthumous Legion of Merit for his service in the Delaware National Guard, with the inscription “Beau exhibited the attributes I have witnessed in only the greatest leaders.”

Biden ran for Attorney General of Delaware in his first political campaign in 2006. He received a five-percentage-point victory in the election. Following his election, he named Richard S. Gebelein, a former Delaware Attorney General and International Judge, as Chief Deputy Attorney General, and Richard G. Andrews, a former assistant US Attorney, as State Prosecutor.

After being elected Vice President in 2008, Joe Biden resigned from the Senate. He was unable to run in the 2010 special election, though.

Similarly, he pondered running for Senate but decided against it so that he could concentrate on the prosecution of Earl Bradley, a convicted serial child rapist.
