Bobby Thomas Career

On August 29, 1966, Thomas recorded some unreleased Atlantic Records tracks with the Dorothy Ashby Octet, which included Clark Terry, Hubert Laws, John Patton, Richard Davis, Ray Barretto, and Randall Hicks,[3] and the Dorothy Ashby Nonet, which included the same personnel but without Laws and instead featured Richard Williams and Clifford Jordan.

“Henry, Sweet Henry,” “Promises, Promises,” “Coco,” “Business,” and “Don’t Play Us Cheap” are among his other Broadway musical credits.

Thomas has collaborated with Jerome Robbins’ Ballet U.S.A., Carmen McRae, Herbie Mann, Cy Coleman, Alvin Ailey Dance Company, Ray Charles, Jimmy Heath, Gloria Lynn, Charles Aznavour, Frank Wess, Dionne Warwick, Joe Williams, Lionel Hampton, Gerry Mulligan, Paul Desmond, Oliver Jones, and the Billy Taylor Trio, among others.

He visited Europe, Russia, the United States, and the Caribbean as a member of the Billy Taylor Trio, delivering two order shows at the White House for Presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford.

Bobby’s compositions have been recorded by Wayne Shorter, Hubert Laws, Junior Mance, Dave Pike, Attila Zoller, and the David Frost T.V. Show Band led by Billy Taylor.

He was the Musical Supervisor for Tony Brown’s Journal as well as the composer of the theme.
Thomas served as co-chair and percussion mentor at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst’s Jazz in July Workshop in Jazz Improvisation.

He’s provided master classes at a number of universities and performing arts centers in the United States and abroad.

From 1993 to 1996, he was an associate professor in the Jazz Faculty at Rutgers University’s Mason Gross School of the Arts.

He worked with Junior Mance and The Montgomery Brothers in 1960.
