Dignam went to the hospital with a potential chest infection: pneumonia.
He was diagnosed with both myeloma, a cancer that attacks plasma cells in the bone marrow, and amyloidosis, a disorder in which amyloid proteins build in the body’s organs, in March 2013.
When Dignam regained consciousness, he related a near-death experience that prompted doctors to give him two doses of adrenaline.
Because there was a blockage in his arm where the adrenaline was entering, they had to cut through the side of his neck, directly into the jugular, and down into his heart, according to Dignam.
For over a minute, he thought he had died, and nothing seemed to matter.
Then, all of a sudden, his heart began to beat faster.
He had chemotherapy to address the illness, and as of September 2017, he was still getting treatment.
He began receiving amyloidosis treatment in 2013, yet he continued to perform and make public appearances until his condition deteriorated.
Dignam’s Personal Life Dignam was born on May 23, 1960, in Dublin’s Holles Street Hospital and grew up in the city’s Finglas area.
