Burton formed his second band, “Agents of Misfortune,” while attending Chabot Community College with Martin. Their band was chosen to compete in the “Battle of the Bands” in 1981.

He joined the local band “Trauma” in 1982 and recorded the song “Such a Shame.” The song became popular and was included on Metal Blade’s “Metal Massacre II” album.

His performance at the Whiskey A-Go-Go nightclub in Los Angeles wowed James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich, who were about to form a heavy metal band. They invited him to join their band as a bass player.

Burton was initially skeptical but expressed an interest in joining them if their band could relocate to San Francisco. Metallica was formed in response to his wish.

The band relocated to Old Bridge, New Jersey, and signed with John Zazula of Megaforce Records. “Pulling Teeth,” Burton’s solo single, was included on the band’s debut album “Kill ‘Em All” in 1983.

Metallica’s second album, “Ride The Lightning,” was released in 1984. Burton wrote six songs for the album. With “For Whom the Bell Tolls” and “The Call of Ktulu,” he established his legacy.

Metallica’s growing popularity prompted major record labels to offer them contracts. Metallica signed with Elektra and released their third album, “Master of Puppets,” in 1986.

The album was a huge success, and it was regarded as one of the best albums of all time. Burton was at his best in “Orion” and “Master of Puppets,” his favorite song.

Metallica toured Europe to promote their third album, “Master of Puppets,” in 1986. On September 26, of that year, they performed in Stockholm, Sweden.

The bus slid off its tracks that night as the group traveled from Stockholm to Copenhagen, crushing Burton beneath. Burton’s mortal remains were burned, and his ashes were scattered across Maxwell Ranch.

Rolling Stone named him the ninth greatest bassist in 2011. This posthumous honor confirms him as a virtuoso bassist two decades after his death.
