Shulman pursued a career in sports writing despite having studied actuarial science. At the beginning of his career, Dan worked as a host on numerous networks.

From 1992 to 1994, he hosted Blue Jays pre- and post-game shows on the Telemedia Sports Network, as well as various ESPN Radio weekend shows.

From 1992 to 1995, he hosted the Toronto Maple Leafs weekly magazine show The Leafs League Report on CFTO, as well as The Major League Report and Baseball Today for The Fan.

In addition, he hosted Prime Time Sports, a nationally syndicated sports radio show that was broadcast throughout Canada.
