Rivera was apprehended by Mexican authorities and turned himself up to US Marshals in Texas a year later.

Rivera, 25, agreed to a plea bargain in 2010 in order to avoid the death penalty and accept a life sentence in prison.

but there was insufficient evidence to link Geovany to the crime.
