Derrick Favors: Professional Career

He was that way because he doubted his abilities and did not want to waste his education. His AAU coach believed otherwise, as he was rumored to be the one who constantly dragged Favors to the court to practice his game.

What later proved to be a motivator for him was discovering a children’s book about his meteoric rise to fame. He was inspired by the story of the Los Angeles Laker’s legend and never looked back.

Derrick Favors was regarded as the best high school basketball player in the country during his time at South Atlanta High School.

He averaged 28.1 points, 13.3 rebounds, 5.0 blocks, 3.0 steals, and 2.0 assists per game as he led his school to the Georgia Class AAA state championship during his senior year.

Following graduation, Favors chose to attend Georgia Tech over other reputable college basketball programs such as NC State or Memphis, all of which offered him scholarships.

Favors averaged 12.4 points and 8.4 rebounds per game as a freshman, helping his team reach the ACC tournament finals, where they were defeated by Duke University.

Favors was later named to the ACC All-Freshman Team and the ACC Rookie of the Year, following which he announced his intention to forego his final three years of college and enter the 2010 NBA Draft, where he was selected third overall by the New Jersey Nets.

Derrick Favors spent less than a year in New Jersey before being traded to the Utah Jazz in February 2011, but he earned NBA All-Rookie Second Team honors during his time there. Favors has remained an integral part of the Jazz setup since then.
