Eric Nam is a Korean-descent South Korean singer, songwriter, and entrepreneur. Eric Namhad released two extended plays, six singles, six collaboration singles, five soundtrack appearances, and 12 music videos as of October 2017.

Eric Nam was born on November 17, 1988, in Atlanta, Georgia. His father is Nam Beom-jin, and his brothers are Eddie Nam and Brian Nam. He was captivated by music from a young age.

He began playing the piano when he was four years old and switched to the cello when he was nine. He remembered Korean traditional music from beginning to end.

In middle school, he discovered K-Pop and idolized artists such as Shinhwa, BoA, Fly to the Sky, and others. He watched ‘Music Bank,’ ‘Inkigayo,’ and ‘Music Core,’ among other programs.

Eric flew to Mexico after ninth grade and spent two months in a small hamlet in Panama, where he provided community development activities.

He spent the summer after that in Guatemala, where he worked at a soup kitchen for the elderly and homeless and taught trade skills to elementary school children.

When he was younger, he used to record cover songs and upload them to YouTube. A JYP manager contacted him after hearing his cover songs and invited him to an audition in New York.

He, on the other hand, made the decision to finish his education first. Eric graduated in 2007 from the Lovett School, where he was involved in sports and the symphonic band.

In 2011, he graduated from Boston College with a bachelor’s degree in International Studies and a minor in Asian Studies. He also studied for a year at Peking University in Beijing.

He became aware of Hallyu’s influence on Chinese society while studying in Beijing and began to listen to groups such as Wonder Girls, Big Bang, Girls’ Generation, 2NE1, 2PM, and 2AM.

Nam worked as a Business Analyst for Deloitte Consulting in New York City after completing his education.

Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation invited him to Seoul to compete in the ‘Birth of a Great Star 2’ competition program after one of his YouTube covers went viral. He was selected as one of the top five candidates.

After the show ended in April 2012, he received an offer from a music label to begin his career in South Korea. After resigning from his position in New York, he traveled to South Korea in June 2012 and began meeting with more companies.

On his mentor’s label, he released a digital single called “Blue Night in Jeju Island” with a project group called “Namaste” during this time.

In September 2012, he signed as a solo artist with B2M Entertainment, a South Korean management and music company. In January 2013, he released his debut mini-album, ‘Cloud 9,’ which included the title single ‘Heaven’s Door.’

From 2013 to 2016, he hosted Arirang TV’s popular live shows ‘After School Club’ and its spinoff, ‘The ASC After Show,’ a show for K-pop artists and their fans that was broadcast in 188 countries.

He interviewed a number of South Korean celebrities on MBC’s Section TV’s ‘Entertainment Relay,’ including Miranda Kerr, Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, Andrew Garfield, Jamie Foxx, Emma Stone, Noel Gallagher, and many more.

His international and Korean interviews have received positive feedback due to his wit and ability to connect with interviewees on a personal level.

In April 2014, he began focusing on his music and returned to the Korean music market with his first digital single, ‘Ooh Ooh.’ He performed a stage show at the Seoul Jazz Festival alongside Chris Botti, Jamie Cullum, Damian Rice, Paolo Nutini, and Craig David.

The show was a smashing success. His second digital single, ‘Melt My Heart,’ was released in December 2014. He appeared on Amber Liu’s mini-album ‘Beautiful,’ on the song ‘I Just Wanna,’ in February 2015.

He released a new song, “I’m OK,” along with a music video in March. In May 2015, he released his charity single “Dream,” which featured 15&’s Park Ji-Min. In December, he signed an exclusive contract with CJ E&M.

On March 4, 2016, Eric debuted ‘Spring Love,’ a duet with Wendy from Red Velvet, on SM Entertainment’s digital music platform SM Station. On March 24, he released ‘Interview,’ his second mini-album, which included the title track ‘Good For You.’

In order to break into the US music scene, he collaborated with the electronic band KOLAJ and released his first US single, ‘Into You,’ on June 10, 2016.

Around the world, the song premiered on Beats 1 Radio and The Fader. On April 16, 2016, he hosted and performed at SNL Korea, earning one of the season’s highest ratings.

In the same month, he appeared on ‘We Got Married,’ a South Korean reality-variety show, where he was paired with Solar, a South Korean singer and actress.

He was nominated for an MBC Entertainment Award for the show.

In July 2016, he released ‘Can’t Help Myself,’ a digital single written by Tablo of Epik High. Loco, an AOMG rapper, was also on the track. He went to KCON LA 2016, an annual Korean wave convention held in various locations around the world.

He performed ‘Can’t Help Myself’ and ‘Into You’ with KOLAJ, and the show was a huge success. He and comedian Yang Se-Hyung co-hosted the ‘Yang and Nam Show,’ a new Mnet chat show, in November 2016.
