Gladys Berejiklian-Professional Career

When former Opposition Leader Peter Collins elected to retire after representing the Willoughby area since 1981, Berejiklian won the Liberal preselection for Willoughby in 2003.

Willoughby has always been a safe Liberal seat, even by northern Sydney standards; considering its time as Middle Harbour, it has been held by the Liberals, their predecessors, or a conservative independent for all but one term since 1927.

However, she was up against Pat Reilly, Willoughby’s long-serving mayor, who came close to winning the seat based on Labor preferences.

She won by 144 votes, while the Liberals were defeated by 10.9 points.

She easily defeated Reilly in a rematch after a 14.5-point swing, restoring Willoughby to its prior status as a comfortably safe Liberal riding.

She hasn’t faced a significant challenge since, with Labor usually dropping to third place.

Peter Debnam pushed Berejiklian to the opposition front bench as Shadow Minister for Mental Health in 2005, then Peter Debnam nominated him to the opposition front bench portfolio of Transport in 2006.

Following the 2007 State election, Opposition Leader O’Farrell appointed her to the Shadow Ministry of Citizenship.

Following Barry O’Farrell’s departure, Mike Baird was elected Leader of the New South Wales Liberal Party and consequently Premier on April 17, 2014.

Berejiklian, Baird’s deputy, was elected.

She was sworn in as the Minister for the Hunter on April 23, 2014, in addition to her other responsibilities, in a later cabinet maneuver.

She was named Treasurer of New South Wales and Minister for Industrial Relations on 1 April 2015, following a cabinet shift announced by Premier Baird following the 2015 state election.

As Treasurer, Berejiklian oversaw New South Wales’ return to surplus.

New South Wales was declared debt-free for the first time in more than 20 years.

She was also in charge of the partial privatization of the state’s energy network.

She approved a conscience vote on the matter in her party.

A considerable number of Liberal Party conservatives opposed the bill.

Tanya Davies, Matthew Mason-Cox, and Lou Amato of the Legislative Council were among those who “expressed dissatisfaction with Berejiklian’s handling of the proposal.”

On multiple times, they asked Berejiklian to “intervene to halt the bill’s “fast-tracking” and appoint a joint select committee to look into the legislation revision.”

Berejiklian, on the other hand, refused their requests.

On September 16, 2019, the three announced that they will arrange a party leadership spill motion against Berejiklian the following day.

Even conservative ministers who opposed the measure hailed Berejiklian and decried the trio’s behavior.

The conservative side of the party also said that the spill was not sanctioned by them.

The trio called off the spill the next morning, citing “further concessions” on bill changes and hinting that their amendments will be considered during the Legislative Council debate.

The Abortion Law Reform Act 2019 was subsequently enacted by Parliament with changes on September 26, 2019, and went into force on October 2, 2019.

As part of her testimony to an Independent Commission Against Corruption examination in October 2020, Berejiklian claimed to have been in a “close personal relationship” with Daryl Maguire from 2015 until August 2020.

Maguire was a fellow Liberal MP until he resigned in 2018 following an investigation that concluded he had sought inappropriate payments.

As a result, the government was defeated in a vote of no confidence in parliament.

She was defeated by a vote of 47-38 in the lower house and 21-20 in the upper chamber, with the Liberal president casting the deciding vote.
