Greta Thunberg Was Arrested But Later Released

The climate activist Greta Thunberg urged the German government to suspend the expansion of the coal mine in Lutzerath on January 17, 2023.

Greta and other activists were held by German police on Tuesday while demonstrating near the Garzweiler 2 opencast coal mine, roughly 9 kilometers from the community.

Police had earlier given the group permission to be detained if they did not move away from the mine’s edge.

Three police officers scooped up the young activist and moved her away from the mine’s edge while holding him by one arm.

He was then escorted back to the Police vans.

RWE, the mine’s owner, had agreed to destroy Lützerath in return for a faster transition away from coal and the preservation of five settlements.

Officers released the climate activist after doing an identity check.

According to the campaigners, Germany should prioritize renewable energy and cease mining lignite and brown coal.

The Swedish environmental advocate, speaking to the 6,000 people who marched near Luetzerath on Saturday, called the mine expansion a “betrayal of present and future generations.”

“Germany is one of the worst polluters in the world,” Thunberg declared, demanding that it be held accountable.
