Former World Cup winner Horst-Dieter Höttges died at the age of 79.

Höttges died on June 22, 2023, as a result of dementia-related problems.

According to Bild, the German football legend had been suffering from dementia for some years.

He spent a considerable chunk of his career at Werder Bremen, making 483 appearances for the Bundesliga club in 14 years.

Höttges won the Bundesliga in 1965 and played in the World Cup final the following year, which his team barely lost to England.

Eight years later, Germany defeated the Netherlands in the World Cup final, with Höttges as an unused replacement.

Höttges gained 66 international caps for his country and featured in ten World Cup competitions between 1966 and 1974.
