Academy Award-winning composer who wrote the scores for such classics as Victor Fleming’s “Joan of Arc,” “The Bishop’s Wife,” “Above and Beyond,” “Between Heaven and Hell,” and “The Adventures of Marco Polo,” which was his first full-length film score. Hugo Friedhofer was born on May 3, 1901, in California. He also wrote the score to the classic 1957 film “An Affair to Remember,” starring Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr. He was a cellist for the People’s Symphony Orchestra. He was hired as a musician by Fox Studios after he moved to Hollywood in 1929. His earliest pictures included “Sunny Side Up” from 1929 and “Grand Canary” from 1934.
