Smith began his coaching career with the New Orleans Hornets in 2004.

He was traded to the Chicago Bulls in 2006 and then to the Denver Nuggets six days later. 

He made a lot of blunders with them at first, but he soon got some solid scoring out of them. 

He did well here and received various awards. 

Due to the NBA lockout in 2011, he signed a one-year contract with the Zhejiang Golden Bulls of China.

He spent the next three years with the New York Knicks.
