In 2013, James Ennis began playing basketball. 

He began his professional basketball career after being selected by the Atlanta Hawks in the 2013 NBA draft.

On the same draft night, he was dealt to the Miami Heat. 

James joined the Heat and participated in the NBA Summer League in 2013.

Due to salary cap rules, the Heat was unable to contract him to play for their NBA Development League affiliate team, the Sioux Falls Skyforce. 

He made the decision to play overseas in order to support his family.

On August 10, 2013, he joined the Perth Wildcats and scored 25 points in his first game, earning him the Most Valuable Player award. 

He relocated to Puerto Rico and joined Piratas de Quebradillas, where he played 12 games before joining the NBA.
