During his college years, John Hein was a member of the sketch comedy troupe Comedy Company, which included actor and comedian Jon Glaser.

The pair and its other members allegedly took a year off from school to tour the entire United States in a van. Hein revealed on the air that they had performed in places such as Walla Walla, Washington, and the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology.

Regardless of how rosy it may appear that the group was brave enough to pursue a career in comedy, Hein admitted that things were difficult for them at one point.
