Herbstreit played quarterback for the Ohio State University football in his senior year after graduating from Centerville High School in Centerville, Ohio.

Kirk was the first player to formally commit to the Ohio State Buckeyes upon the hiring of John Cooper as head coach in 1988.

Kirk went on to earn four letters and become one of the team’s finest players during the next five years.

During his time there, he shared the field alongside Greg Frey and Kent Graham and served as team captain in 1992.

He was named MVP for the 1992 season.

Intriguingly, Herbstreit and his father, Jim Herbstreit, became only the second father and son combo to represent Ohio State, as Jim Herbstreit served as team co-captain in 1960 alongside offensive tackle Jim Tyrer.

Kirk formerly held the record for the most passes completed by any player at Ohio State before Troy Smith broke it in 2006.

Kirk retired from playing and moved into broadcasting.

Along with Desmond Howard, Rece Davis, and Lee Corso, he was a member of the ESPN College GameDay expert panel, which debated and analyzed college football games, highlights, and player profiles.

He eventually became an analyst for Chris Fowler and ABC Sports’ college football primetime series.

In 1997, he was nominated for a Sports Emmy Award for best studio analyst on television for this effort.
