Laurie Stephens had been skiing and loving it since she was 12 years old, and by the age of 15, she had joined Christ Devlin Young’s New England impaired ski team. She began competing in events in five categories: downhill sitting, slalom, giant slalom, super G, and super combined at local and national levels.
She made her Paralympic debut in 2006, competing in the games for the first time. Laurie again competed in the Paralympic Games in 2010, 2014, and 2018, winning a total of seven medals, including two gold, two silver, and three bronze. Meanwhile, she has competed in the IPC Alpine Skiing World Championships since 2011, winning silver and bronze medals in Sestriere.
By 2013, she had competed at La Molina and won bronze and gold medals in the Downhill and Sitting events, respectively, and she had also won a bronze medal at Panorama in 2015. She recently won a gold medal in the women’s giant slalom sitting para-alpine skiing event at the 2021 World Para Snow Sports in Norway.
She is currently representing the United States at the 2022 Beijing Paralympic Games, with her first downhill sitting event scheduled for March 7–5, 2022. She’ll be up against world-class competitors like Anna Lena Foster and Kranjska Gora in a tight race.
