The politician was raised in a Roman Catholic household. He was jailed for corruption in 2018 but was released after serving 580 days in prison. Luiz Inácio Lula Da Silva, better known as Lula, is a politician, trade unionist, and former metalworker from Brazil.

He is currently serving as Brazil’s 39th president.

The politician is a member of the Workers’ Party and served as Brazil’s 35th president from 2003 to 2010.

He is also the first contender to unseat an incumbent president in a presidential election.

The Religion of Lula Da Silva: Family and Ethnicity

Lula Da Silva grew up in a Roman Catholic household.

The politician is the seventh of his parent’s eight children, Aristides Inácio da Silva and Eudice Ferreira de Melo.

Lula’s mother was born in Portugal and is of Italian ancestry.

His father, on the other hand, is from Brazil.

Two weeks after Lula was born, his father traveled to Santos, So Paulo, with Valdomira Ferreira de Góis, his mother’s cousin.

Lula was seven when his mother relocated the family to So Paulo to reconnect with her husband in December 1952.

After a 13-day trek in an open truck bed, they landed in Guarujá.

They discovered, however, that Aristides had begun a second family with Valdomira.

For a time, the two Aristides families shared a house.

They spent four years together despite not getting along.

Euridice (Lula’s mother) then moved her family to a small room behind a bar in Sao Paulo.

Lula only saw his father on rare occasions after that. Lula’s father, Aristides, died of alcoholism in 1978.

Why Was Brazil’s President Arrested in 2018?

In April 2018, a federal judge issued an arrest warrant for Lula da Silva.

The order came after the Supreme Court of the United States ruled that he must begin serving a 12-year term for corruption.

According to the arrest warrant, he was not handcuffed and was moved to a different detention cell after being taken into custody.

The Supreme Court rejected the president’s motion for a habeas corpus stay of execution in a tight judgment in a case that polarized the country and heightened tensions ahead of the elections.

Lula da Silva was convicted guilty of the charges in July 2017.

The unionist vehemently denied any misconduct. According to his defense, he was a victim of political persecution.

The Brazilian politician was released in November 2019 after serving 580 days in prison.

Lula met hundreds of fans wearing red vests with his likeness outside the federal police headquarters in Curitiba.
