A British scholar of art and archaeology, he is known for published works such as The Art of Vase-Painting in Classical Athens (1992) and The Parthenon Frieze (1975). He was the father of musician Thomas Dolby. He studied at Trinity College, Cambridge and spent time in Athens, Greece before returning to England.
