González was signed as an international free agent by the Chicago Cubs on November 23, 2005. From 2006 to 2011, he was a member of the Cubs’ farm system, reaching Triple-A with the Iowa Cubs in 2011. He was an infielder until 2008, when he moved to the outfield.
The Boston Red Sox selected González from the Cubs in the 2011 Rule 5 draft and then traded him to the Houston Astros for pitcher Marco Duarte. He stands 6 feet 1 inch (1.85 m) tall and weighs 205 pounds (93 kg). He is a switch hitter who throws right-handed.
In 2012, González was named to the Astros’ Opening Day roster. He appeared in 80 games for the Astros and 13 games for the Triple-A Oklahoma City RedHawks. With Houston, he batted.234 while hitting two home runs and driving in 12 runs (RBIs). In 2013, González split his time between the major leagues (72 games) and Triple-A. (There are 44 games.) González broke up Yu Darvish’s perfect game bid for the Texas Rangers on April 2, with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning. This season, he batted.221 with four home runs and 14 RBIs for Houston.
González played in Major League Baseball for the next five seasons, all with the Houston Astros. He batted in 364 games between 2014 and 2016. 268 runs batted in, 31 home runs, and 108 RBIs. He became the first player in Major League Baseball history to hit his first 25 home runs with no one on base. On May 6, 2016, he ended the streak with a home run with Evan Gattis on second base. Marwin started as a defensive infielder in 2012 and 2013, then moved on to defensive infielder and outfielder. By the end of the 2016 season, he had played every position for Houston except pitcher and catcher.
