Morris Dees- Professional Career

After graduating from the University of Alabama School of Law (1960) Dees traveled to Montgomery where he chose to launch a mail-order and book publishing firm.

Despite growing up in segregated Alabama, his parents instilled strong Christian principles in him, and he had pleasant contacts with African American families, which caused him to build a reputation for supporting the cause of African Americans.

Dees, along with Joseph J. Levin and Julian Bond, founded the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) in Montgomery, Alabama in 1971, and they have been recognized for finding novel tactics to cripple hate groups such as the Ku Klux Klan, primarily through the use of damage litigation.

He also authored two books, Hate on Trial: The Case Against America’s Most Dangerous Neo-Nazi (1993) and Gathering Storm: America’s Militia Threat (1996).

In addition, Dees earned various prizes, including the ABA Medal in 2012, the highest distinction granted by the American Bar Association, and the Roger Baldwin Award by the American Civil Liberties Union in 1990.

Two dozen former employees accused Dees of being complicit in harassment and racial discrimination, while at least one female employee accused him of sexual harassment.

He was known for hitting on women and mistreating non-white and female workers.

In 2019, the SPLC fired Dees for unclear reasons and stated that the firm would employ an “independent group” to conduct additional investigation.

Philanthropy Dees had raised a lot of money for SPLC by exploiting the unfair “hate-group” classification.

To put it another way, SPLC seemed to prioritize successful fundraising over adhering to its fundamental beliefs.
