After the failure of International MicroSpace, Inc. in 1994, Diamandis founded the XPrize Foundation and read Charles Lindbergh’s “The Spirit of St. Louis.”

He serves as the foundation’s CEO and Chairman. XPrize was founded to fund and run a $10 million incentive competition designed to inspire a new generation of private passenger-carrying spaceships.

The prize was announced in St. Louis, MO on May 18, 1996, without any teams or purse money.

The prize was eventually funded by an insurance policy underwritten by the Anousheh and Hamid Ansari families, and the prize was renamed the Ansari XPrize in their honor.
