Ray McElrathbey- Birth, Parents, Siblings & Education
Ray McElrathbey was born on September 26, 1986, as Ramon D. McElrathbey. He studied sociology and communications at Clemson University and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in 2008. Later, he earned a degree in sports/fitness administration and management from Howard University. During his time at Howard, he was a member of the football team.
In 2010, he earned a fitness degree. At Mays High School, Ray was coached by Durrell Caldwell. He had numerous offers to play at various universities. Arkansas, Florida, Auburn, Minnesota, Georgia Tech, Vanderbilt, and Tulane were among them. However, he chose Clemson above the other schools and became a Clemson Tiger.
Ray’s mother battled heroin addiction as a child, while his father suffered with gambling. Ray and his younger brother Fahmarr had no one in the family to look after them. The authorities placed Fahmarr, the younger brother, in foster care due to the family’s poor living conditions. Ray, as a young adult and a wonderful child to his parents, did not consent to his younger brother’s placement in the foster care system.
When Ray was 19 years old, he sued for custody of his younger brother, who was 11 years old at the time. As a result, he adopted his younger brother lawfully. His daily routine consisted of waking up Fahmarr, sending him to middle school, going to classes and football practices, and returning home with lunch for Fahmarr.
This was their routine until Larry Williams, a writer, contacted the brothers about writing a story on them. ESPN was the first to pick up the news, and it was later picked up by other networks. The brothers began appearing on a variety of shows, ranging from Today to Oprah.
Clemson compliance officers, on the other hand, began advocating for the boys’ rights and normal lives. They battled for NCAA waivers. They seek assistance for the brothers and allow Ray’s 11-year-old brother to be cared for by the school. Following that, the NCAA offered the brothers assistance.
Fahmarr established himself as a staple at Clemson’s football facility. He had a carpool set to pick him up from school each day, and he also went to practices every day. Ray eventually received the highest education and attended well-known universities. Fahmarr followed him as he sought graduate degrees.
