Peston briefly worked as a stockbroker at Williams de Bro, then became a journalist at Investors Chronicle in 1983 before joining The Independent in 1986.

 Peston was Deputy City Editor for the short-lived Sunday Correspondent newspaper between 1989 and 1990 before being appointed Independent City Editor on Sunday 1990.

Peston was a Financial Times reporter from 1991 to 2000. 

At the FT, he was the Political Editor, Banking Editor, and the head of an investigation unit (which he founded).

In the year 2000, he was appointed editorial director of the Collins Stewart financial firm’s Quest internet financial analysis service. 

At the same time, he became a contributing editor for The Spectator and a weekly columnist for The Daily Telegraph.

In 2001, he switched from the Telegraph to the Sunday Times, where he wrote a weekly company profile called Peston’s People, and he left The Spectator for the New Statesman, where he wrote a weekly column. 

In 2002, he became City editor and editor-in-chief of The Sunday Telegraph. In 2005, he was appointed as editor-in-chief.

Peston left the BBC to join ITV News as a political editor on October 4, 2015, replacing Tom Bradby, who became the primary News presenter at Ten. 

Peston’s last BBC News appearance was on November 25, 2015, and his first appearance on ITV’s News at Ten was on January 11, 2016.

When Prime Minister David Cameron stated in an interview in April 2016 that he had benefited from his father’s offshore Blairmore Holdings trust after data on the trust was made public in the Panama Papers release.

He hosts Peston on Sunday, ITV’s new weekly political discussion show that premiered on May 8, 2016. 

In 2018, the show was rebranded Peston and moved to a Wednesday night time slot.

Peston received the Harold Wincott Senior Financial Journalist of the Year Award (2005), as well as the London Press Club’s Scoop of the Year Award in 2005. (2005). 

The Granada Television What the Papers Say Award for Investigative Journalist of the Year (1994) and the Wincott Young Financial Journalist of the Year (1995) were both bestowed upon him (1986).

Peston was named “Specialist Journalist of the Year” and “Television Journalist of the Year” at the Royal Television Society’s 2008/09 Television Journalism Awards. 

He also received the Royal Television Society’s “Scoop of the Year” award.

In 2009, he was named Political Journalist of the Year at the Political Studies Association Awards, and he led general public and reporter polls conducted by the Press Gazette to determine the best financial and business journalist.

Peston was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from HeriotWatt University in 2010. 

In recognition of “his achievement in journalism in 2011,” he was named an Aberystwyth University Fellow.
