Ji-hyo-Professional Career

She had developed an interest in acting when she was in high school, after seeing the 1998 South Korean film Promise, starring Park Shin-yang.

When she was a teenager, her classmates dubbed her ‘Chupa Chups,’ after the popular lollipop brand, since her head appeared excessively large on her thin shoulders.

She used to work part-time at a cafe during her early days of hardship.

Before making her feature film debut in 2003 with the horror thriller Wishing Stairs, she worked as a cover model for Kiki, an interactive bi-monthly youth magazine aimed at girls aged 8 to 14.

During the audition for her role in Wishing Stairs, she beat out over 3000 other actresses.

She was nominated for ‘Best New Actress’ at the 24th Blue Dragon Film Awards for her performance.

She picked the stage name ‘Song Ji-hyo’ as a combination of the names of two popular actors, Song Seung-heon and Song Hye-kyo.

In an interview, she stated that she was inspired by the work of both of the main protagonists in the romantic drama TV series Autumn in My Heart.

She had altered her birth name, Cheon Seong-im, to Cheon Soo-yeon before taking on this stage of identity.

She explained in a May 2017 episode of the variety show Running Man that she changed her name since the latter was more identifiable.
