Sydney also holds the world under-20 record of 53.60 seconds after setting a junior personal best of 52.75 seconds in 2018.

At the 2016 New Balance national outdoor high school championships, Sydney won the 400-meter hurdles in 54.46 seconds, breaking Maxie’s prep record, the global youth record, and Lashinda Demus’ American junior record of 54.70.

She also competed on Union Catholic’s Swedish medley relay team, where she had a fast 50.93 split for 400 meters, helping the team set a new high school record of 2:07.99.

McLaughlin won the USATF junior championship in 54.54 seconds the following week, earning her the title of Gatorade National Girls Athlete of the Year.

On January 28, 2017, she was part of an American Record quartet that broke the indoor distance medley relay world record with a time of 10:40.31 at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix.

Following that indoor season, on March 12, 2017, at the New Balance Nationals in New York City, McLaughlin set a new national 400-meter record of 51.61 seconds.

McLaughlin started her outdoor season in April 2017 by breaking the national high school record for the 300 m hurdles in 38.90 seconds at the Arcadia Invitational.

McLaughlin was named the Gatorade National Female Athlete of the Year in 2015-16 and 2016-17. 

She was the only athlete in the award’s 15-year history to win it twice.

After she won the award for the second time in July 2017, she was on the cover of Sports Illustrated at the age of 17, and the magazine called her “one of the most dominant high school athletes ever.”

Following one year at Kentucky, she relinquished her NCAA eligibility to go pro in June 2018, and in October of that year, she signed a sponsorship contract with New Balance.
