Tom Cavanagh was born on October 26, 1963, in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, to Roman Catholic Irish parents.

His parents, both teachers, volunteered to work in third-world countries such as Ghana, where Cavanagh spent a portion of his childhood.

Cavanagh contracted malaria during his stay in Winneba, Ghana, which influenced his decision to become an active donor to Nothing But Nets, a United Nations Foundation that raises awareness and funds to combat malaria in African countries.

Cavanagh has four siblings, including a brother who works as a crown attorney in Ottawa, Ontario, and three sisters, two of whom live in Canada and one in the United Kingdom.

Cavanagh and his parents moved from Ghana to Lennoxville, Quebec, where he attended the Séminaire de Sherbrooke, a private high school.

He was an athletic kid in high school, playing basketball for the varsity Barons team. At school, he also learned French and is now bilingual, speaking both French and English.

Despite his hectic academic schedule, Cavanagh found time to participate in extracurricular activities. He was a member of both the college basketball and ice hockey teams.

Tom became interested in acting while studying at Queens. He developed an interest in theater and music, and after graduating, he landed a role in the 1989 Broadway revival of “Shenandoah,” gaining some exposure.

Cavanagh has never looked back since. He continued to play theatric roles and, in the early 1990s, added TV and film roles in his home country of Canada. One of his most well-known roles was in a television commercial for Labatt’s Blue beer.

As the years passed, Tom Cavanagh transitioned to American television, with one of his first roles as Doug the Dog Guy in NBC’s Providence.

In his first lead role as Ed Stevens in Ed, an NBC TV series that premiered in 2000, he received critical acclaim.

Cavanagh and his wife have four children as of this writing. Their first child, a daughter named Alice Ann, was born on February 10, 2006.
