Llamas began his broadcasting career in 2000 with the NBC News Specials Unit before moving to MSNBC, where he worked from 2000 to 2005, primarily covering politics. He then went to work for NBC’s Miami affiliate, WTVJ.

In 2009, Llamas moved to New York and began working as a general-assignment reporter for WNBC and NBC News. In September 2014, he joined ABC News as a New York-based correspondent, and he filled in for David Muir on ABC World News Tonight during the Christmas 2014 season.

In 2015, Llamas took over as the Sunday anchor of ABC World News Tonight. He took over as the sole weekend anchor in January 2017.

Llamas covered the Republican candidates in the 2016 U.S. Presidential Election. He chastised Jeb Bush and Donald Trump for using the term “anchor baby,” and Trump referred to him as a “sleaze” after questioning him about the amount of money he had donated to charity.
