Winsome Sears is an American politician, businesswoman, and veteran who is now serving as the lieutenant governor-elect of Virginia. She is an active Republican Party member.
From 2002 to 2004, she was a member of the Virginia House of Delegates. She was elected lieutenant governor in 2021, making her the first woman, the first black woman, and the first person of Jamaican descent to be elected statewide.

Winsome Sears’s Professional Career
Sears formerly worked as the director of a homeless shelter before entering politics. Sears won the 90th district seat in Virginia’s House of Delegates in November 2001, unseating 20-year Democratic incumbent Billy Robinson.
She was the first Jamaican woman, veteran, and naturalized citizen delegate to serve in the House of Representatives. In 2004, she ran for the 3rd congressional district seat against Democrat Bobby Scott, but she lost with only 31% of the vote.
She later rose to the position of vice president of the Virginia Board of Education and began to receive presidential nominations as part of her duties.
She ran for the United States Senate in September 2018 and garnered less than 1% of the vote. She ran as a write-in candidate in the election.
On the 11th of May 2021, Sears defeated Tim Hugo, the second-place finisher in the Republican nominations for lieutenant governor of Virginia, while on the fifth ballot.
On November 2, 2021, Sears ran for lieutenant governor of Virginia, winning the election and being the first black woman elected statewide in the state.
On the 15th of January 2022, she is set to take office as Virginia’s 42nd lieutenant governor. She stated in her winning speech that she was still a Jamaican when she enlisted in the Marine Corps.
