Donnelly began his career with Radio Clyde in the 1970s, hosting the popular Mid-Morning Show beginning in 1979. 

Later, in 1980, he joined the BBC Scotland Sports Department, where he was involved in the presentation of various programs such as Sportscene Live (which includes events such as the Scottish Cup Final and Scotland internationals), Afternoon Sportscene, the network’s rugby union coverage, and the football World Cups in 1990 and 1998.

Donnelly hosted two series of a TV chat program, Friday Night with Dougie Donnelly, and was named Scottish TV Personality of the Year in 1982.

He left the BBC after his 33rd consecutive Scottish Cup Final in 2010, and is now the chief commentator on European Tour Productions’ worldwide live TV coverage of golf’s European Tour, going to approximately 20 tournaments per year across the world.

Dougie also covered four Commonwealth Games, four Summer Olympic Games, and three Winter Olympic Games, where he commented on the British women curlers’ Gold medal victory in Salt Lake City in 2002.

He has also presented various radio and television quiz shows and appeared on The Weakest Link, Ready Steady Cook, Banzai, and The Games.
