Bill Walton – Professional Career
Walton guided the UCLA basketball team to a 30-0 record with an average margin of victory of 30 points in 1971-72.
He was a key contributor to UCLA’s two consecutive 30-0 seasons, as well as its NCAA men’s basketball record 88-game winning streak.
After an 88-game winning streak, the school was defeated 71-70 by Notre Dame in the 1973-74 season.
UCLA’s future was sealed after his graduation in 1974 and the retirement of Bruin coach John Wooden following UCLA’s 1975 national championship.
Following his graduation, he was taken as the first overall pick in the NBA Draft by the Portland Trail Blazers.
Bill was dubbed the franchise’s savior and was much expected, but injuries to his nose, wrist, and foot derailed his first two seasons.
Similarly, he improved his physical condition during the 1976-77 season, when he appeared in 65 games and led the NBA in rebounding and blocked shots per game.
He suffered foot injuries yet again and opted to leave the Blazers.
He asked to be traded during the 1977-78 winter, but he was not, and he was forced to sit out the 1978-79 season in protest.
After being released, he signed as a free agent with the San Diego Clippers.
Bill played 14 games for the Clippers in two seasons and underwent three reconstructive foot surgeries.
After a significant recovery in his foot, he was forced to be traded to the Boston Celtics following the 1984-85 season.
Despite his injury, he made an effort to return for the playoffs in 1987, but the injury reoccurred, forcing him to miss the full 87-88 season, and he retired in 1990, citing recurring injuries.
He let his foot and ankle heal, but things worsened and he had to have his ankles surgically united.
He was a fantastic talent, but he was forced to miss the majority of his NBA games.
