Boris Valábik – Professional Career

After spending the 2002-03 season with Valábik local HC Nitra U-20 team.

Valábik was picked in the first round, 48th overall, by the Kitchener Rangers of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) in the 2003 CHL Import Draft.

On September 19, 2003, Valábik appeared in his first OHL game.

He concluded the 2003-04 season with three goals and sixteen points in 68 games, assisting the Rangers to a playoff berth.

In the postseason, though, he was held scoreless in 5 games as Kitchener was defeated in the Western Conference quarterfinals by the Plymouth Whalers.

Valábik was chosen to the CHL All-Rookie Team following the season.

During the 2004-05 season, he struggled offensively. In the Western Conference finals, the Rangers were defeated by the London Knights.

He returned to Kitchener for his last season in 2005-06, when the team made the playoffs for the second time in three years.

Valábik had two assists in five playoff games as the club fell to the Owen Sound Attack in the Western Conference quarterfinals.

The Atlanta Thrashers selected Valábik in the first round, 10th overall, in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft.

The Thrashers, on the other hand, returned him to his junior team, the Kitchener Rangers, for the 2004-05 and 2005-06 seasons.

Valábik signed an entry-level deal with Atlanta on March 30, 2006.

For the 2006-07 season, he was assigned to the Chicago Wolves of the American Hockey League (AHL).

On October 7, 2006, he appeared in his first AHL game.

Valabik scored his first AHL goal in his next game, on October 13.

He concluded the season in Chicago, appearing in 50 games and scoring two goals and nine points to help the Wolves secure a playoff spot.

Valábik earned an assist in eight postseason games as the Wolves fell to the Iowa Stars in the West Division playoffs.

Valábik joined the Wolves for the 2007-08 season.

 On March 17, 2008, the Thrashers called him up to Atlanta, and two days later, on March 19, Valábik made his NHL debut.

He spent the 2007-08 season with Atlanta, where he scored 0 points in 7 games.

He was then returned to the Wolves for their Calder Cup playoff run.

Valábik scored his first AHL playoff goal on April 26, 2008.

He appeared in 24 postseason games with Chicago, scoring three goals and four points as the Wolves won the Calder Cup.

Valábik began the 2008-09 season with the Wolves, scoring one goal and three points in 11 games.

However, in November, the Thrashers called him up for the rest of the season.

On December 10, 2008, he earned his first NHL point, and he concluded the season with Atlanta, appearing in 50 games.

Boris joined the Wolves in 2009-10.

 However, he suffered an ankle injury in preseason practice and missed the first six weeks of the season.

Valábik returned to the lineup on November 20, 2009, and appeared in six games with Chicago before being called up again to Atlanta.

He appeared in 23 games for the Thrashers, recording two assists. 

However, his 2009-10 season was cut short in early February when he tore his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL).

The Thrashers placed Valábik on waivers on October 15, 2010, which he cleared, allowing him to be returned to the Wolves.

He had 9 assists in 49 games with Chicago.

On February 18, 2011, he and Rich Peverley were traded to the Boston Bruins by the Atlanta Thrashers.

Valábik finished the 2010-11 season with the Providence Bruins, the Boston Bruins’ AHL affiliate.

He became an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season.

He signed a one-year contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins on July 3, 2011.

He injured his knee during a Penguins practice on October 3, but the Penguins waived him on November 2.

He passed waivers and was sent to the Penguins’ AHL club, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.

He became a free agent again after the season.

On August 14, 2012, Valábik signed with HC Kometa Brno of the Czech Extraliga. 

In early January, he requested his release.

Valábik joined the Portland Pirates of the American Hockey League on January 11, 2013, and helped the team reach the playoffs.

In the Eastern Conference quarterfinals, the Pirates were defeated by the Syracuse Crunch.

Valabik joined the Blaze at the beginning of the 2015-2016 season. 

He was quickly promoted to Alternate Captain.
