In the ninth round of the 1995 NHL Entry Draft, he was selected by the Toronto Maple Leafs.

However, he left Moscow midway through the 1996-97 season and began playing for the Maple Leafs’ farm team, the St. John’s Maple Leafs, until the 1997-98 season.

At the end of the 1997-98 season, he made the move to the NHL.

He was dealt to the Phoenix Coyotes for Travis Green, Robert Reichel, and Craig Mills after four seasons in Toronto.

He was with the Coyotes for two seasons before joining the Carolina Hurricanes for the 2003-04 season.

Partway through the season, he was traded to the Philadelphia Flyers for forward Justin Williams.

On March 5, 2004, he scored the Flyers’ 10,000th goal against Patrick Lalime and the Ottawa Senators in a 5-3 win at the Wachovia Center.

The Flyers were in potential difficulty with the new salary cap in the months leading up to 2005-06 and wanted to sell some payroll.

As a result, they dealt him to the Nashville Predators in exchange for a third-round pick in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft.

Even in 2012-13, it was the same, with the exception of CSKA Moscow. He spent the 2013-14 season with CSKA Moscow.

Markov is known for his tenacity. Markov had an injury below his eye during one of his Leafs games, necessitating stitches.

He refused anesthetic stitches in order to continue playing. Markov is also well-known for giving Jaromr Jágr his iconic “goal-salute” after the Maple Leafs knocked the Penguins out of the 1999 NHL playoffs in an overtime win in the Eastern Conference Semi-Finals.
