Ekblad played for the Sun County Panthers minor midget AAA squad in the AHMMPL in 2010-11. 

He led the team to an alliance championship as captain.

After a six-week assessment, Hockey Canada unanimously approved Ekblad’s candidacy to be the lone player born in 1996 in the draft.

Ekblad became the first defenseman to be designated as a “exceptional player” after receiving the permission. 

Because of his status, he was able to play in the Canadian Hockey League a year before his eligibility age.

He spent three seasons in the OHL with the Barrie Colts before retiring in 2014. 

The Florida Panthers selected Ekblad first overall in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft.

On September 3, he signed his first NHL contract, a three-year entry-level agreement with the Panthers. 

On October 9, Ekblad made his NHL debut against the Tampa Bay Lightning. 

On November 1, Ekblad scored his first NHL goal against the Philadelphia Flyers.

Ekblad set a career best with three points against the Buffalo Sabres on December 6, becoming the Panthers’ first rookie to do it since Dan Boyle in 1998-99.

Ekblad was picked as an injury substitute for Erik Johnson in the 2015 NHL All-Star Game on January 23, 2015. 

In 81 games for Florida, Ekblad finished his debut season with 12 goals and 27 assists (39 points). 

Ekblad was chosen as one of three finalists for the Calder Memorial Trophy on April 23, 2015, and he was crowned the Calder winner on June 24, 2015.

Ekblad and the Panthers agreed to an eight-year, $60 million contract deal on July 2, 2016.

Aside from that, Ekblad represented Canada at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament in 2013 (first place), the IIHF World U20 Championships, and the 2015 World Championships (where they won gold for the first time since 2007).

Ekblad received a concussion in an exhibition game against the Czech Republic at Team Canada’s junior team’s training camp in August 2014, in preparation for the forthcoming 2015 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships in December 2014.
