Bruce Blakeman in Politics

Bruce Blakeman, a former Nassau County legislator who ran unsuccessfully for New York Comptroller in 1998, was the first to announce his candidacy in February 2010.

On March 16, 2010, former U.S. Representative Joe DioGuardi announced his candidacy, and he was immediately followed by economist David Malpass.

At the state Republican convention in June 2010, Blakeman and Malpass both obtained the minimum 25% of delegate votes.

DioGuardi failed not to earn the majority of delegate votes to be the designated nominee, despite leading in primary surveys and receiving the Conservative Party’s endorsement.

DioGuardi qualified to compete in the Republican primary against Blakeman and Malpass after submitting over 25,000 signatures.

Regardless of whether they won the Republican primary, each candidate faced an additional ballot line; DioGuardi was supported by the Conservative Party of New York State, Malpass by Carl Paladino’s Taxpayers Party of New York, and Blakeman by the Nassau County-based Tax Revolt Party.

After losing the primary, Malpass handed over the Taxpayers’ line to DioGuardi, but Blakeman remained on the general election ballot as the TRP candidate.
